Heritage River Recreation Staff

(Summer Students)

Duration: May 2, 2016 – September 2, 2016

Hours: 40 hours/ week
Rate: bi-weekly, $13.25


Do you love the outdoors? Do you love the St. Croix River? Want to get outside this summer and help preserve one of the world’s most unique recreational areas? The St. Croix International Waterway Commission is looking for a person like you.

The SCIWC maintains 56 wilderness recreational facilities and delivers interpretation activities along 100 km of international waterway. You will be based out of our office in St. Croix, NB (near McAdam) but will travel along the length of the river and the tributary lakes of the St. Croix system. We are looking for good, honest, hardworking people with top notch communication skills, outdoor experience, and the ability to work as part of a team. 

You’ll be the public face of the SCIWC, so it is important that you know about what we do and why we do it. You’ll be speaking with boaters, campers, outfitters, and other people using the waterways, providing them with information about the waterway and our recreation facilities. You’ll be helping to maintain the campsites, boat ramps, and accesses to the waterway. Along with the others on our team, you will be ensuring that all our facilities are safe and clean for users and staff. You will also conduct periodic Water Quality testing and analysis along various stretches of the watershed.

Desired Skills and Experience

Required skills and experience:

  • Good communication skills
  • Valid driver’s licence, passport and ability to travel freely to the US
  • Physically fit (light to moderate lifting, canoeing, walking, etc.)
  • Boating experience (canoe/outboard)
  • First aid training (standard first aid as a minimum)
  • Knowledge of the St. Croix waterway
  • Strong work ethic and self-motivation
  • Ability to adapt to changing situations
  • Requirements of Canada’s Summer Jobs

Desired skills and experience: (not necessary to apply)

  • Chainsaw skills (safety certification)
  • Advanced first aid (wilderness first aid)
  • Mechanical and maintenance experience
  • Swiftwater rescue training and certification
  • Computer-based reservation systems
  • Customer service experience
  • Environmental/Conservation knowledge and skills

A current, clean criminal record check will be required in order to commence employment.

Partial funding for this position is provided by Service Canada’s Summer Jobs program. In order to be eligible for this position, you must:

                    Be between 15 and 30 years of age;

                    have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;

                    be a Canadian citizens or permanent residents or have official refugee protection status under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (foreign students are not eligible); and

                    be legally entitled to work in Canada, according to relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.

Remuneration and Benefits

This position is salary-based. You will be paid bi-weekly upon submission of an activities report. You will be responsible for transportation to and from work from your home. If you use your personal vehicle for work (travelling, moving materials, attending meetings, acquiring supplies, etc.) you will be paid mileage upon submission of an expense claim.


The SCIWC will provide you with the training and equipment you need to do your job safely and competently. This includes maintenance equipment, communications equipment, campsite supplies, signs, and all reporting materials. You will also be supplied with a uniform as well as a staff handbook outlining safety procedures and organization protocol.
